# Hotel checkout checklist

> Before hotel checkout, empty the in-room safe, unplug every charger, check the bathroom, closet, drawers and under the bed, grab anything from the minibar fridge, and keep your passport and wallet on you. Then review your bill for charges you don't recognize and hand in or drop off your key card.

Hotel rooms are designed to make your things disappear. White sheets swallow white cables, the safe sits hidden in a closet, and the bathroom counter fills up with small bottles that all look like the hotel's.

Unlike an Airbnb, you don't need to tidy or switch much off. The job is to leave with everything you arrived with. Lost-and-found departments are full of phone chargers, passports from the safe, and the one shirt someone hung behind the bathroom door.

## The places things hide

- [ ] In-room safe emptied (Passports and jewelry left in the safe are among the most common hotel losses.) [worth a photo]
- [ ] Chargers and adapters out of every outlet, including by the desk
- [ ] Under the bed and between the sheets
- [ ] Closet, including the back of the door and the ironing board
- [ ] Every drawer, even the ones you don't remember using
- [ ] Bathroom counter, shower shelf and the hook behind the door
- [ ] Minibar fridge for anything you put in it
- [ ] Nightstand, including glasses and earplugs

## On you, not in the bag

- [ ] Passport or ID [worth a photo]
- [ ] Wallet and cards
- [ ] Phone
- [ ] Boarding pass or onward ticket
- [ ] Medication you'll need during the day [worth a photo]

## Before you leave the room

- [ ] Laptop packed [worth a photo]
- [ ] Bag zipped and nothing left on the luggage rack
- [ ] Iron off, if you used it [worth a photo]
- [ ] Taps off
- [ ] A last look around from the doorway

## At the desk

- [ ] Bill reviewed for minibar, room service or parking you didn't use
- [ ] Key cards returned or dropped in the express box
- [ ] Luggage stored if your flight is later
- [ ] Receipt emailed to you for expenses

## Tips

- If you use the safe, put one shoe in with your passport. You won't leave without your shoe.
- Use a single outlet for all your chargers during the stay, so there's only one place to check.
- Stand in the doorway and look at the room one last time before the door closes. Most forgotten items are visible from there.
- Keep your passport in the same pocket of the same bag on every trip, so a quick pat tells you it's there.

## Questions people ask

### What are the most commonly forgotten items in hotel rooms?

Phone chargers top most lists, followed by things left in the safe, toiletries, clothes on the back of doors, and glasses on the nightstand.

### How do I make sure I don't leave my passport in the hotel safe?

Put something you can't leave without, like a shoe or your car keys, in the safe with it. Or take the passport out the night before checkout.

### What should I check on my hotel bill at checkout?

Look for minibar items, room service, parking, resort fees and phone charges. Ask about anything you don't recognize before you sign or leave.

### What happens if I leave something in a hotel room?

Call or email the front desk as soon as you notice. Most hotels log found items and will post them to you, usually at your cost.
